Control Geometry refers to curves that already exist in your model, or separate new curves you create that coexist with your part. The following Control Geometry tab is displayed for all Mill operations. It allows you to assign either Part Regions, Containment Regions, Avoid Regions and/or Start Points depending on the current operation type. Each region type is assigned a sub-tab within the dialog with the regions are listed. The definition of each region type is provided below. Be sure to review the list of Related Topics at the bottom of this topic for more information about Machining Regions.

The Part Regions tab displays in all 2½ Axis and some 3 Axis operations. It is used to drive the tool during the operation. Use one of the Select... buttons in this dialog to add Part Regions to the Selected Machining Region(s) list. See Select Part/Containment Regions for more information. |
The Containment Regions tab displays in most 3 Axis operation dialogs. It is used to contain the extents of the tool during the operation. Use the Select Curve/Edge Regions button or the Select Flat Area Drive Regions button to add Containment Regions to this list. See Select Part/Containment Regions for more information. |
The Avoid Regions tab lists the geometry (i.e., Regions) to be avoided by the cutter during the current Mill operation. The outer diameter of the tool will not enter this region. Note: This feature is not available in Xpress configuration. See Avoid Regions for more information. Used for the following operations: This tab is available on the following operation dialogs: Facing, 2½ Axis Pocketing, 2½ Axis Profiling, 2½ Axis |
The Start Points tab allows you to specify a start point for the tool entry motion for pocketing and roughing operations. Selecting a start point applies the entry motion to the specified location. Note: This feature is not available in Xpress configuration. See Start Points for more information. This button moves the selected item up (i.e., higher) in the list. Items are machined in the order listed. |
This button moves the selected item down (i.e., lower) in the list. Items are machined in the order listed. |
Pick this button to Remove All Regions from the list. The geometry itself is not deleted from the part model. |
Pick this button to Remove the selected Active region from the list. You can select multiple Regions from the list using the Ctrl key and then pick this button to remove them all. The geometry itself is not deleted from the part model. |
Pick this button and the dialog will minimize, prompting you to make a selection from your part. You can select curves or face edges. After completing the selection, the dialog will re-appear with your Region selections listed. |
Pick this button and you are prompted to make a selection from your part. You can select flat planar face geometry. After completing the selection, the dialog will re-appear with your region selections listed. |
Pick this button to select Start Points for the operation. The dialog will minimize, prompting you to make a selection from your part. You can select either a point or a curve/edge. If you select a curve/edge, the Start Point of the curve/edge is used. After completing the selection, the dialog will re-appear with your Region selections listed. |
If you pick this button, the Select Pre-defined Machining Regions dialog will display, allowing you to select one or more Regions. This operation dialog will then re-appear with your region selections listed. Pre-Defined Regions can be created using the options on the Regions tab of the Machining Objects Browser. See Predefined Machining Regions for more information. |
This will minimize the dialog and prompt you to Select Features for the operation. From your part model, select one or more features you want to machine. (Note: Features will highlight on the part as you move the mouse cursor over them.) After confirming your selection the dialog will re-appear with your features listed. Machining Features can be created using the options on the Features tab of the Machining Objects Browser.
